July 2, 2025Mexican / LA Street Hot Dog
The Iconic Danger Dog, Bacon Wrapped and Fully Loaded
Meet the street food legend. This bacon wrapped hot dog sits in a toasted bun and is topped with grilled onions, peppers, mayo, ketchup, and jalapeños. You’ve probably seen these sizzling on late-night LA street corners. Now you can bring that smoky, savory flavor to your own grill in under 30 minutes.
A Quick History of LA Street Dogs
This recipe traces back to Hermosillo, Mexico, where bacon wrapped franks were tucked into bolillo rolls and topped with beans and salsa. When they made their way to Los Angeles, street vendors swapped in soft hot dog buns and layered on mayo, ketchup, mustard, grilled onions, peppers, and jalapeños. These became known as Danger Dogs, not for their ingredients but because they were often grilled illegally on sidewalks. Today, they’re a beloved part of LA nightlife and Mexican-American cookouts.

Ingredient Spotlight
| Ingredient | What to Know |
|---|---|
| Beef hot dogs | Choose all beef for flavor and juiciness. Bun length fits best. |

| Buns | Go for soft but sturdy. Brioche and potato buns hold toppings well. |
| Peppers and onions | Use jalapeños and bell peppers for color and balanced heat. |
